Have you ever realized—and wondered why—some researchers struggle to be taken seriously in public discussions, despite their expertise? Or why some voices are often undervalued in public outreach?
While we often focus on inclusion and diversity in academia, these issues also play out when researchers communicate their work to a broader audience. In this lunch talk, Seppe van Bladel will dive into this underexplored area of discrimination and bias within science communication.

Seppe is a recent philosophy graduate from Antwerp and is currently pursuing a research master's in philosophy at the University of Antwerp and Ghent University. His main areas of interest are feminist philosophy and ethics. For his master's thesis project, he spent a year collaborating with science communicator Julie De Smedt, studying science communication from ethical, social-epistemological, and empirical-philosophical perspectives.
Through interviews with underrepresented researchers in Flanders, he discovered how identity-based biases affect the credibility and impact of researchers.
